With no fanfare whatsoever, Apple overnight have released new iMacs. This is the first meaningful update to the lineup since June 2017 and brings them up-to-date with 8th generation Intel Core processors. Depressingly, they keep a slow, spinning 5400 RPM hard drive as the base option but can all be upgraded to SSDs. I don’t let my clients buy iMacs without an SSD installed - even a Fusion Drive is not acceptable in a professional workstation these days.

The base model and the mid-range 27” iMac now have a Radeon Pro 570 or 575X GPU and the top spec iMac is configurable with a Vega 48 with 8GB, which is just one step down from the GPU in the iMac Pro.

The new iMacs keep the same outstanding Retina 4K display on the 21.5-inch model and Retina 5K display on the 27-inch model, both with wide-gamut P3 capabilities.
